Life can throw you curveballs when you least expect it, and for legendary shock jock Howard Stern, one of those moments came in a form he never anticipated. In May 2017, Howard took a rare day off from his wildly popular radio show, The Stern Show. Fans were buzzing with theories about why their favorite radio personality wasn't behind the mic, but little did they know, Howard was facing something far more serious than the flu.
What seemed like a simple health issue turned out to be a potential life-altering diagnosis. During this time, Howard was dealing with a cancer scare that prompted him to reflect deeply on his life, his achievements, and his regrets.
A Day That Changed Everything

On May 10, 2017, Howard Stern wasn't just feeling under the weather—he was in the hospital undergoing surgery. It all started when doctors noticed a concerning drop in his white blood cell count. Further tests revealed a growth on his kidney that had a 90 percent chance of being cancerous. Howard recalled his thoughts during this uncertain time: “I’m going to die,” he said, admitting he was terrified. But as it turned out, the growth was a benign cyst, not cancer. Still, the experience left a lasting impression on him.

Reevaluating Life and Relationships
This close call made Howard reflect on his life choices, especially his relationships with his family. He has three daughters—Emily, Deborah, and Ashley—and their mother, Alison Berns, from his marriage that lasted from 1978 to 2001. Howard admitted that in the past, he was so consumed by his career and personal struggles that he didn’t prioritize the people who mattered most to him. “I was so completely f—ked up back then,” he confessed. “I didn’t know what was up and what was down, and there was no room for anybody else on the planet.”
Now, Howard is determined to make amends and focus on the relationships he neglected. “I’m at a place now where I am trying to figure out how to spend the rest of my life, however long that might be,” he said. It’s clear that Howard is embracing a new chapter in his life, one where family and personal growth take center stage.

Retirement on the Horizon?
The cancer scare also made Howard consider his future in radio. While he loves what he does and excels at it, the thought of retirement has crossed his mind. “To walk away from what I’m good at … I don’t even know that I have it 100 percent right yet. And maybe there’s more to explore,” he mused. Howard isn’t ready to hang up his mic just yet, but he’s certainly pondering the possibilities.
For now, fans can rest assured that Howard Stern continues to thrive, both personally and professionally. We’re rooting for him as he navigates this new chapter in his life. Here's to many more years of Howard's unique voice on the airwaves!
