When it comes to motherhood, these moms know what’s up! In an inspiring conversation with her close friend Jenna Bush Hager, Joanna Gaines—mom of five—shared the highs and lows of parenting. With honesty and vulnerability, Joanna revealed why motherhood truly means the world to her.
“Motherhood means everything to me,” Joanna, now 40 years old, told Jenna, who is also a mom of two and is 37 years old, in a recent issue of Southern Living magazine. “Even if everything else in my life were to disappear, this—being a mom—is my thing. It’s what gets me out of bed every morning. These kids, they’re my heart.”

Joanna's Heartfelt Reflections on Motherhood
Joanna Gaines candidly admitted that each day brings her immense joy—and sometimes challenges—because of the overwhelming love she feels for her five adorable children. “You just assume that kids will naturally fit into your life, but when I had my babies, I didn’t realize how deeply they would connect with every fiber of my heart,” Joanna shared. “No matter where I am or what I’m doing, my mind is always with them. I never expected it to be this intense.”
She went on to say, “Even as I drive to work in the morning, I’m thinking, ‘Did I do enough to make sure my kids know how much I love them?’ I’m a multitasker, but there’s not a moment when my kids aren’t on my mind. This wasn’t something I anticipated when I became a mom.”
Life Before Motherhood
Reflecting on her younger years before having children and meeting her husband, Chip Gaines, Joanna said, “Back then, I was the ultimate homebody. I felt most loved, most understood, and most valued when I was with my family. Home was my sanctuary, and I cherished it. Even during my college days, living in an apartment in Waco, Texas, with friends, I still longed for the comfort of home.”
Learning and Growing as a Mom
These days, Joanna Gaines, the star of Fixer Upper, is immersed in a life filled with kids, love, and plenty of shiplap walls. She’s still learning the ropes of motherhood, especially navigating the inevitable guilt that comes with being a parent.

“I’ve gone through so many stages of guilt, and it keeps creeping back in,” Joanna confessed. “It can be paralyzing. But I remind myself that I don’t want to waste any time on emotions that don’t bring positivity. I focus on what I can do to show my kids that I love them. Whether it’s as simple as making a cup of hot cocoa or finding other little ways to connect, those moments matter.”
Becoming a Mom Again
With her four older children—Drake, 13, Ella Rose, 11, Duke, 10, and Emmie Kay, 8—growing up, Joanna has had to relearn how to be a mom to a newborn all over again with baby Crew, who is now 8 months old. “Since having Crew, I’ve become even more sensitive to all of this,” Joanna admitted. “I truly feel like I was born to do everything I’m doing right now. And I have a lot of support. My goal is to be someone who encourages other moms.”
She added, “I remember those times when I was home and couldn’t even take a shower. Social media can sometimes make you feel like your life should look a certain way, but you need to step back and realize that everyone’s journey is unique. Celebrate others for both their small and big accomplishments, and celebrate yourself for being exactly who you’re meant to be. I want women to feel empowered. Know that you’re doing enough. Embrace your individuality.”
