When you’ve got Goop in your life—and let’s not forget Netflix—who really needs Iron Man, right? Well, that’s kind of the vibe we’re picking up from actress Gwyneth Paltrow. After a decade of playing assistant-turned-girlfriend to Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark in the Marvel films, she's ready to step away from the role. It’s been quite the journey, and now it’s time to say goodbye.
In a candid interview with Variety, Gwyneth shared, "I genuinely feel honored to have been part of something that resonates so deeply with fans." But she also admitted, "I think I'm a little too old to be suiting up for all that now. I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of it, though. Honestly, I didn't even think twice about saying yes when Jon Favreau approached me. Making the first Iron Man was such a magical experience, and watching it evolve into this massive phenomenon has been incredible."
A Look Back at Gwyneth's Marvel Journey

Let’s rewind to the first Iron Man, released back in 2008. Executive producer Louis D’Esposito said, "Casting Gwyneth as Pepper Potts was truly inspired. We were all so fortunate she agreed to take on the role. She's an incredible actress, and from the moment she stepped into the room with Robert, it was electrifying."

Gwyneth, now 46, recalls her decision to join the cast as an easy one. "Growing up, Marvel comics were always around the house because my brother adored Spider-Man from a young age, but I'd never been part of a project of this magnitude. When I heard Robert Downey Jr. was playing Iron Man, Terrence Howard was on board, and Jon Favreau was directing, I thought, ‘Sign me up!’"
Bringing Pepper Potts to Life
Jon Favreau elaborated on how they reimagined Pepper Potts for the big screen. "In the comics, Pepper is Tony’s secretary who kind of worships him. We wanted to modernize that role and tailor it to Gwyneth's personality—sharp, poised, and classy. Pepper keeps Tony grounded, organizes his life, and acts as his moral compass. There's a perfect balance between them, which creates some romantic tension. We wanted to explore that dynamic because it wasn’t fully fleshed out in the original comics."

Gwyneth noted the subtle chemistry between Tony and Pepper. "It's not about what they do—it's about what they don't say. Pepper is Tony's closest confidante and his anchor. She protects him, takes the fall when he messes up, and keeps him on track. Tony's a genius who can create extraordinary things, but like many artists, he struggles with the practical side of life. That's where Pepper comes in and keeps him grounded."

Gwyneth's Final Appearances as Pepper
Gwyneth reprised her role as Pepper in Iron Man 2 (2010), The Avengers (2012), Iron Man 3 (2013), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and this April’s Avengers: Endgame. Rumors suggest this might be the end of the road for both her and Robert Downey Jr., depending on Iron Man's fate.
Still, Gwyneth isn't ruling out future appearances. "If they ever say, ‘Can you come back for a day?’ I'll always be there if they need me, whether it's for new scenes or flashbacks."
Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26.
