Elton John Reveals He Leaves His Stage Persona At The Door

Picture this: a man who has graced stages around the world with flamboyant costumes and a voice that could rock any arena. But when he steps into his home, he’s just Dad. That’s the life of Elton John, who recently shared how he keeps his dazzling stage persona separate from his family life. In a candid conversation with Us Weekly and other reporters, the 71-year-old singer revealed his secret to balancing fame and fatherhood.

Elton, who shares two children—8-year-old Zachary and 6-year-old Elijah—with his husband, David Furnish, opened up about how he manages to stay grounded. “They know that daddy is famous,” Elton said during an appearance at the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party. “But when we’re out in the summer and people are taking our photograph or asking for one, they ask, ‘Why do they want your photograph?’” He went on to explain, “And we always say, ‘Because people like my music.’ They know what daddy does, but I never bring Elton home. I try to leave Elton on the stage.”

Grounded Kids in a Glittering World

Elton’s kids, Zachary and Elijah, are incredibly grounded despite their father’s larger-than-life career. “They love their daddy’s music, but they also like a lot of other people’s music,” Elton shared with a smile. Interestingly, the boys have only seen their dad perform live once—in New York. But even with his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour winding down, Elton plans to take a much-deserved break. “By the time I finish this tour, I’ll be at least 75, and that will be a chance to reassess what I want to do,” he said thoughtfully.

Future Plans After the Farewell Tour

As the legendary musician gears up for the conclusion of his global tour, he’s already thinking about the next chapter. “I’d like to make more records, I’d like to write more musicals,” Elton revealed, “but I would also like to spend more time with my children and David.” He added earnestly, “I just owe it to these children to be there for them. They deserve a dad who’s present, not just a rock star who tours endlessly.”
