Marcia Gay Harden Reflects On Her Mother's Battle With Alzheimer's Disease

Remembering a Heartfelt Thanksgiving

It’s been well over a year since the passing of Marcia Gay Harden’s beloved mother, Beverly Bushfield, who succumbed to Alzheimer’s disease. Recently, the renowned actress, activist, and author of the heartfelt memoir The Seasons of My Mother was honored at an event. During this occasion, she opened up about the poignant and challenging Thanksgiving spent with her mom in Texas—a memory that continues to resonate deeply with her.

Marcia, now 59, shared her story with People at the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Hope on the Horizon fundraiser on March 4. She recalled the difficult moment when she first arrived for the visit. “On the first day, I barely recognized my 81-year-old mom. She seemed distant, hardly present, and her communication was limited. She didn’t smile much or speak in full sentences,” she said. “Still, we treated her like the incredible person she was, despite no indication that she would pass away just three weeks later.”

A Silver Lining in the Second Day

On the second day of Marcia’s visit, something remarkable happened—Beverly became more engaged and radiant. This shift brought comfort not only to Marcia but also to her children, Eulala, 20, and twins Hudson and Julitta, 14. “We spent time reminiscing about Thanksgiving traditions, cooking together, and enjoying music. We even sat around a warm fire,” Marcia fondly remembered. “Although the younger kids didn’t know their grandmother well, they felt drawn to her presence.”
