Vanessa Lachey, the former MTV VJ, has shared a deeply personal story about one of the most challenging periods in her life. When her son Phoenix Robert was just two years old, he ended up in the hospital due to a respiratory syncytial virus shortly after his birth. Now, she’s opening up about that harrowing experience and how it affected her family.
During a recent appearance on E! News’ Mom2Mom segment, Vanessa revealed the severity of the situation. “He was in the hospital for seven days in the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit),” she explained. “It was a terrifying time. We were so close to losing him, and it was something I’ll never forget.”

Vanessa and Nick's Journey Through Hardship
Vanessa, now 38, is married to Nick Lachey, and together they have three beautiful children: Phoenix, Camden (6 years old), and Brooklyn (4 years old). When Phoenix was in the hospital, Vanessa says it put a strain on their marriage. “It was definitely the hardest part of my life, and also the hardest part of our marriage,” she recalled. “It wasn’t negative, just incredibly challenging.”
Vanessa went on to explain how they managed to get through such a difficult time. Nick, who was 45 at the time, decided he would take care of their two older children so Vanessa could focus all her attention on Phoenix. “I didn’t leave his side in the hospital,” Vanessa said. “Thankfully, I have such a supportive husband. He really stepped up during that time.”
Rebuilding After the Storm
By dividing their responsibilities, Nick and Vanessa were able to keep their marriage intact. However, they admit they haven’t fully processed everything that happened. “Nick mentioned the other day, ‘I don’t think we’ve ever really gotten over that,’” Vanessa shared. “We’ve never sat down and talked about what bothered us. We’ve just been playing catch-up ever since. It was such an intense time.”
Despite the challenges, Vanessa and Nick remain committed to their marriage, taking it one day at a time. They’re grateful that Phoenix is now home with his family, safe and healthy. “There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t thank God for giving him to us and keeping him safe, healthy, and happy,” Vanessa wrote on Instagram. “You are so loved!!!”
