Chrissy Teigen Opens Up About Postpartum Depression: How John Legend Helped Her Through It

As a mother of two, Chrissy Teigen has always been open about her personal struggles, including her battle with postpartum depression. Recently, she credited her husband, John Legend, for being her rock during one of the toughest periods of her life. In a heartfelt conversation on the "Today" show, Chrissy shared how much his support meant to her.

John Legend: The Pillar of Strength

During the interview on April 2, Chrissy, now 33, expressed her gratitude toward her husband and medical professionals who stood by her side. "John and my doctors were my strength," she revealed. "I had such a supportive team around me—people who were paying close attention to my well-being. I was genuinely different. It wasn't just exhaustion; it was deep sadness, relentless self-criticism, and a pervasive feeling of inadequacy. It wasn't just the baby blues, which many of us mistakenly assume is what we're experiencing. I was going through something far more complex."

Breaking the Stigma Around Mental Health

Chrissy emphasized the importance of speaking up and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health issues. "Talking to other women made me realize just how distinct this feeling is—it's a truly unique experience that can be incredibly challenging," she explained. "We need to encourage everyone to share their stories. By opening up the conversation, we can create a safe space where no one feels ashamed to seek help."

Chrissy admitted that she didn't initially realize she was dealing with postpartum depression after the birth of her first child, Luna. "It happened when Luna was born. At the time, I thought it was normal to feel this way. I assumed that this low point was just part of motherhood, and there was no way around it," she recalled. "It wasn't until those around me started noticing significant changes in my personality that I realized something wasn't right. I wish there had been more resources available to me back then. It's astonishing that such support isn't universally accessible."

A Better Experience the Second Time Around

Chrissy shared that her second pregnancy with son Miles, now 11 months old, went much smoother. However, she noted that being aware of what to expect made all the difference. "If it happens again, I understand it now," she said. "And for any future babies, I'll be prepared. But right now, another child isn't in the cards."

She explained her reasoning to People magazine: "I feel like I'd miss out on Miles. Luna was at a great age because she was growing up, talking, and we knew another baby could fit into our lives. But Miles is still so little, and I don't want to miss any of his milestones."
