Why John Legend Skipped The 2019 Grammys — And It’s Hilarious!

When it comes to big award shows, you'd think everyone would be lining up to attend. But not this time! Singer Kelly Clarkson wasn't the only star missing from the 2019 Grammys on Sunday, February 10. John Legend, the legendary music icon, was also absent from the 61st annual awards extravaganza. And guess what? His wife, the witty and charming Chrissy Teigen, gave fans a hilarious reason why her husband decided to stay home. Right before the red carpet rolled out, Chrissy took to Twitter to share the inside scoop.

Now, you might think skipping an event like the Grammys is a big deal, but for John Legend, it was more like a well-deserved break. Chrissy, who’s as funny as she is beautiful, joked in a tweet, “No Grammys for us today. John got an EGOT and egot lazy.” In the photo Chrissy posted, John, 40, is seen cozied up on the couch, snuggled under a mountain of blankets, looking completely at peace. Chrissy, 33, even doubled down with another tweet: “I’m so proud of this.” Let’s take a look at Chrissy’s clever post below!

Here’s the deal: Chrissy wasn’t just throwing shade—she was celebrating her husband’s massive accomplishments. Last year, John officially became an EGOT winner when he took home an Emmy at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards in LA in September 2018 for his work in the TV special Jesus Christ Superstar. An EGOT is no small feat—it’s the holy grail for entertainers, meaning a star has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony throughout their career. As a singer, John has scored an impressive 10 Grammys and has been nominated for the award 28 times. He won his Oscar in 2015 for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song for “Glory” from the film Selma, and nabbed his Tony for producing Jitney. So yeah, John’s earned the right to kick back and relax!

Of course, John wasn’t the only music star to skip the Grammys this year. Kelly Clarkson, the powerhouse vocalist and former American Idol champ, was also MIA. Kelly hopped on Twitter before the show to explain her absence, and it wasn’t because she’d earned every award under the sun. Nope, she’s out on tour, giving her all to fans across the globe.

Kelly tweeted, “I’m out touring so couldn’t make #Grammys2019 tonight BUT couldn’t b more appreciative 4 the nomination & couldn’t be more excited 4 everyone there! 2 all the artists nominated & not nominated, win or lose, feel blessed that u get to do what u do 4 a living!” We totally feel you, Kelly. And we missed you both, John and Kelly!
