Let's talk about a Hollywood legend, shall we? Rita Moreno, the powerhouse actress who skyrocketed to superstardom after her unforgettable role in West Side Story, recently shared some eye-opening thoughts about her experience on the set. Despite the film's success, there's one aspect of her journey she wishes could've been different.
At 87 years old, Moreno sat down with the Associated Press to discuss the challenges she faced during the making of the 1961 classic. One of the most striking revelations? Her skin was artificially darkened to better fit the portrayal of her Puerto Rican character, Anita. "Puerto Rico has a rich history of colonization by the French, Dutch, and Spanish, making us a diverse mix of colors," Moreno explained. "I'm proud of who I am, so it really bothered me when they applied such dark makeup. That's just not me."

Moreno shared that she believed the Sharks, the Puerto Rican gang in the film, should have been allowed to embrace their natural skin tones. "Some were dark, some had copper skin, and others were fair," she pointed out. As a dancer and actress, she was vocal about her concerns with the makeup team. "I remember telling the makeup artist, 'I really hate this color because it's not who I am,'" she recalled. Shockingly, the makeup artist's response was not what she expected. "He actually asked me, 'What, are you racist?' It left me speechless," Moreno admitted.
