When Love Blossoms After a Breakup
Love stories don’t always follow a straight line, and that’s exactly what Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid are proving. On a heartfelt appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on January 29, Courteney, who's now 54, shared how her relationship with Johnny, 42, grew stronger after they decided to take a step back in 2015. Sometimes, breaking up isn’t the end—it can be the beginning of something even better.
“He’s not my fiancé anymore,” Courteney told Ellen with a warm smile. “We were engaged to be married, but we decided to take a break. Johnny moved to England, and we both realized how much we truly wanted each other. Now we’re together again, and it’s actually better than it was before.”
Distance Can Bring People Closer
Courteney went on to explain how the distance between them actually strengthened their bond. “Everything’s better now,” she said. “Not because he’s in London—though I think the distance after that breakup, when we were apart for six months, really showed us a lot. It’s just better.”

And while maintaining a long-distance relationship isn’t cheap, it’s clearly worth it for the couple. “It’s expensive,” Courteney admitted to Ellen. “That’s an expensive relationship! We go back and forth a lot.”
A Different Way of Looking at Labels
In a previous interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Courteney opened up about how she doesn’t quite connect with the term “partner” when describing Johnny. “He’s my partner,” she joked. “That’s what he calls it, but I’m from Alabama, so you don’t really say partner unless you’re in the same sex.”
Instead, Courteney prefers to call Johnny her “guy” or “one.” “Saying partner’s difficult for me,” she confessed. “I was in Atlanta not that long ago and I was like, ‘Oh, I’m supposed to meet my partner in section F,’ and they were like, ‘Oh, I’m sure she’s going to be there, don’t worry about it.’ Not that it matters, but it’s just a different way to speak.”
