Alright, let's dive into this. You might remember Suicide Squad, that DC Comics movie that critics didn't exactly go wild for, but it still crushed it at the box office. A big part of that success? The magnetic performances of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as the Joker, and Will Smith as Deadshot. Fast forward to now, and James Gunn, the guy behind the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, is back for the sequel. But here's the twist—none of those stars, not even Will, are reportedly coming back. Instead, we're hearing that Idris Elba might step into Will's role as Deadshot.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Elba met with Gunn last week, and it went so well that serious talks with the studio began immediately. He was James Gunn’s top—and only—choice. Warner Bros. is super excited about The Suicide Squad and its script, which Gunn wrote. They’re moving fast into the casting phase after Gunn quickly polished off multiple drafts. Before he came on board, the project was stuck in development limbo for years, cycling through different writers and directors.”
Let's Break Down the Movie's Concept
The basic idea behind the Suicide Squad comics is that a secret government agency, led by the fierce Amanda Waller (played brilliantly by Viola Davis in the first movie), ropes imprisoned super-villains into doing dangerous, high-stakes missions to save the world in exchange for shorter sentences. Will Smith's Deadshot character? He's a hired gun by day and a devoted father by night. This guy loves his job, but he's also deeply conflicted by his love for his daughter.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Will once said about playing Deadshot, “This was the first time I played a character who genuinely didn’t care about anything. It was incredibly freeing to not have to carry the moral weight of the movie.”
When it came to crafting the character, Will credited director David Ayer for guiding him toward the John Douglas book The Anatomy of Motive. “I couldn’t figure out what would make someone comfortable killing another person for money,” Will explained. “Once I understood that it could feel good, it really opened up my perspective on Deadshot.”
DC Comics Movies: A Mixed Bag
DC Comics movies have definitely had their ups and downs. They've found their groove with films like Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Shazam!, and Joker. There's also a lot of buzz around Margot Robbie's upcoming Birds of Prey, where she reprises her role as Harley Quinn. But there have been some creative hiccups along the way, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and, of course, the original Suicide Squad.
This September, Will lends his voice to the animated film Spies in Disguise, which is about a top-notch spy named Lance Sterling who teams up with his gadget guy, Walter, to save the world while disguised as a pigeon. Walter is voiced by none other than Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland.
In October, Will stars in Gemini Man as Henry Brogan, an older assassin trying to retire but ends up battling a younger clone of himself who can predict his every move. He's also set to portray Richard Williams, the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams, in the biopic King Richard.
