Hey there, let me tell you about something pretty exciting. Last year, Broadway lit up with a hit called The Boys in the Band. Now, thanks to Ryan Murphy, it’s set to make its mark on Netflix as a major movie event. And guess what? The entire original Broadway cast is coming along for the ride, including heavyweights like Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer, and Zachary Quinto. This is going to be something special, trust me.
A Journey Through Time
The Boys in the Band has a rich history that dates back to 1968. Written by Matt Crowley, this play dared to explore the lives of gay men in New York City during a time when such stories were considered incredibly controversial. Picture this: a group of men gathered for a birthday party, but beneath the surface, there's a whirlwind of emotions and conflicts. Crowley wasn’t just writing a play; he was channeling years of frustration and anger into a powerful narrative that resonated deeply with audiences back then—and still does today.
When Crowley sat down to write this play, it wasn’t about activism or changing laws—it was about expressing raw emotion. He was angry, not just at his own struggles but at the world around him. The societal attitudes and legal barriers of the time fueled his creative fire. "I wanted to expose the injustices faced by these characters, who were a microcosm of what was happening in the world," Crowley explained to Mississippi Today. His anger and frustration poured onto the page, creating a story that was both personal and universal.

View this post on InstagramLast summer, THE BOYS IN THE BAND were on Broadway, breaking house records at The Booth. THIS summer, The Boys In the Band will be filming a Netflix movie event. The incomparable Joe Mantello, who directed the Broadway revival, will direct the film adaptation. The Broadway cast of BOYS was so important to me, and as equally groundbreaking as Mart Crowley's seminal work. Everyone in the cast was out and proud…and feeling so blessed to mark the 50th anniversary of Mart's landmark play. The entire Broadway cast will reprise their roles in the film. I can't wait to be on set with Joe and Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Matt Bomer, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesus, Tuc Watkins, Michael Benjamin Washington and Brian Hutchison. I will be producing the film with David Stone and Ned Martel. Look for THE BOYS on Netflix in 2020.
Who’s Who in the Cast?
So, who’s bringing these characters to life? Let’s break it down. Zachary Quinto, who you might know as Spock from the Star Trek movies, plays Harold. Harold's celebrating his birthday, but deep down, he's feeling down about losing his youthful charm and struggling to attract younger men. Then there’s Jim Parsons, famous for The Big Bang Theory, who plays Michael. Michael is Harold’s so-called "friend-enemy," hosting the party while wrestling with his own demons as a lapsed Catholic and alcoholic. He’s the one who sets much of the drama in motion. And don’t forget Matt Bomer, star of White Collar and Will & Grace, who plays Donald. Donald is Michael’s conflicted boyfriend, who's moved away from the city to escape the gay lifestyle and is now in therapy.
Andrew Rannells, known for his role in Girls, plays Larry, a fashion photographer with a penchant for multiple partners. Charlie Carver, from Desperate Housewives and The Leftovers, plays Cowboy, a handsome blond prostitute who’s one of Harold’s birthday surprises. Robin De Jesus, who's appeared in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and 11:55, plays Emory, a flamboyant interior decorator whose humor can sometimes grate on others.
More Characters to Know
Brian Hutchison, who’s been in Bridge of Spies, plays Alan McCarthy, an unexpected guest at the party. Alan is Michael’s old college friend, who’s married but seems to have a complicated past with men. His sexual orientation is left to the audience’s interpretation. Michael Benjamin Washington, who’s performed in Broadway’s Mamma Mia!, plays Bernard, an African-American man who still dreams of the wealthy white boy from his childhood. And finally, Tuc Watkins, known for One Life to Live and Desperate Housewives, plays Hank, Larry’s live-in boyfriend. Hank has a history of being married to a woman and prefers to pass as straight, disagreeing with Larry about monogamy.

A Legacy That Lives On
This isn’t the first time The Boys in the Band has been adapted for the screen. Back in 1970, it was turned into a film directed by the legendary William Friedkin, known for The French Connection and The Exorcist. But now, with Netflix taking the reins, the story is set to reach a whole new generation of viewers in 2020. It’s a testament to the enduring power of Crowley’s work and the incredible talent of this cast.
