Sometimes life throws you curveballs, and you end up in places you never imagined. For actress Elizabeth McGovern, that unexpected turn led her to the UK, where she's carved out a life filled with professional triumphs and personal joy.
An Unexpected Journey Across the Pond
Elizabeth McGovern didn’t picture herself leaving the United States when she embarked on her acting career. “It was never my intention to leave America,” she exclusively shared with Closer Weekly during the NYC premiere of her latest film, The Chaperone. But love has a way of changing plans. In 1992, Elizabeth married British writer and director Simon Curtis, known for his work on films like My Week With Marilyn. This union brought the Illinois-born actress to the UK, where she's since made her home.

Building a Life in the UK
Since relocating, Elizabeth has found immense professional success, most notably through her role in the globally acclaimed TV series Downton Abbey. The show not only brought her back to the big screen but also cemented her status as a household name. Beyond her career, Elizabeth cherishes her life in the UK as a mother to her now-grown daughters, Matilda and Grace. The actress admits, “I love living there, and I’ve really appreciated raising children there.” She even finds charm in their English accents, joking that it makes them seem “more polite and intelligent.”

Reflecting on her journey, Elizabeth acknowledges that she’s still in the midst of it. “All I can say is that I feel really grateful that life took me there,” she shares. Her move to the UK wasn’t just a career decision; it was a life-altering choice that she’s embraced wholeheartedly.
Hollywood's Bright Lights Didn't Suit Her
For Elizabeth, leaving Hollywood wasn’t a difficult decision. She once revealed that being an A-lister in Los Angeles never felt quite right. “I was a bit overwhelmed by it, to be honest,” she confessed to the Independent. “I did a lot of turning down offers. The way it works in Hollywood is that if you’re hot, it doesn’t matter if you’re right for the part or not, you’re just offered it. And I really didn’t listen to anyone’s advice. I just went my own way, which isn’t always the right thing to do, but, for better or for worse, that’s what I did.”

The Juilliard-trained actress eventually found her place in Europe. “Hollywood never suited me. I didn’t ever feel comfortable with it,” she laughed. “It took me a couple of years, but I found where I was always meant to be... Chiswick! That’s it... Chiswick High Road, that was where I was always meant to be.”
